31 Countries That Hate Americans

Land of the free, home of the brave. The country of dreams. Everyone wants to live in the USA, right? Okay, well, everyone at least thinks Americans are great...right? Maybe not. Guess it really is impossible to please everybody.

When nations hate Americans for one reason or another, it can cause some tension and problems. American ideals, politicians, habits, attitudes, and a plethora of other topics can lead to members of a foreign country harboring a deep hatred or distrust of America, and honestly, some of those feelings are justified.

Today, we"re taking a look at some of those countries that can"t stand Americans. Maybe these shouldn"t be near the top of your vacation bucket list!

Note: All statistics included in this article are from the Pew Research Center, a non-partisan public opinion research organization, and several other sources—which are all listed throughout.

Greece
Greece

Debt-ridden Greece finds it difficult to embrace any American message of hope, as shown by the 63% unfavorable rating on the Pew Research survey.

One recurring complaint among Greek natives has to do with public drinking. They tend to look down upon people who really let themselves go in public--which is exactly what a lot of young American tourists do when they visit.

Egypt
Egypt

The U.S. backing of Hosni Mubarak, and a failure to do anything about the overthrow of the Muslim Brotherhood, leaves 85% of those surveyed by Pew Research with an unfavorable view of Americans.

This, coupled with cuts to foreign aid to Egypt, have led to this massive disapproval numbers for the United States.

Germany
Germany

Germans have a bit of a love/hate relationship with the U.S. In spite of a 70% unfavorable rating, many Germans simultaneously want to be admired by Americans.

Like many countries, Germany has a perception that Americans tend to be lazy, messy, and too patriotic. Which is true enough but is particularly rich coming from a country with its own history of extreme patriotism...

Iran
Iran

Since 1979, when Iran seized the U.S. embassy in Tehran, there"s been no love lost between Iranians and Americans—resulting in a 61% disapproval rating according to MarketWatch.

More recently, the government of Iran has (cynically, some suggest) pointed to our current protests and civil unrest as more evidence of our badness. Strangely, they don"t have much to say about their own humanitarian crises...

France
France
France has always had a love/hate relationship with the United States, but because of how poorly we handled the coronavirus pandemic and the unsavory actions from the past election, France came out with a 67% disapproval rating for the United States. Not to mention, that if you ever visit France yourself, you will not feel welcomed no matter how hard you try because French people have a general distaste for everything American.
Jordan
Jordan

Egypt"s neighbor seems to reflect a similar view in the same survey—American favorability ratings have dropped 13 points since 2009, leaving 85% with an unfavorable view of the U.S.

Strangely enough, public sentiment is at odds with the official government position. Jordan is considered to be one of America"s closest Middle Eastern allies, and the Jordanian government is explicitly pro-America.

Italy
Italy
Italy was the first big-news country in the western world to shut down because of COVID. However, the United States did not follow suit, and now Italians view us incompetent as a nation and gave the U.S. a 55% disapproval rating. While Italians were stuck in their small city apartments for months on-end, we had Karens running around angry about wearing a simple face mask. We honestly don’t blame them for not approving of us.
Turkey
Turkey

A huge influx of Syrian refugees without significant assistance from the U.S. may contribute to the 73% unfavorable view of America reflected in a Pew Research survey.

When former president Barack Obama visited the country 2009, he was greeted by protesters calling America the enemy of the world"s people and telling him to go home.

The UK
The UK
The United Kingdom is another nation that we have always had a love/hate relationship with, you know, the American Revolution and everything, but then later on all of the alliances in the World Wars and stuff. However, because of America’s actions in 2020, we are back in the hate territory of the U.K. who gave us a 55% disapproval rating overall.
Japan
Japan
Speaking of love/hate relationships, Japan! Even though it seemed that the Japanese were over the whole atom-bomb thing (oops!), we have yet again fallen into their bad graces in 2020.With how poorly everything has gone in 2020 for the U.S., the Japanese now rate us as a whole with a 54% disapproval score. To look on the bright side, that’s only a little over half of the country!
Palestinian Territories
Palestinian Territories

The U.S. is perceived as fully supporting Israel, which doesn"t sit well with Palestinians—as reflected in a 66% to 72% unfavorable rating across multiple surveys.

While this is somewhat a drop from the all-time high disapproval rating of 80%, it"s unlikely that it will drop much lower, as long as the US is perceived to be an ally of Israel.

Russia
Russia

Relations with Russia have been chilly since the Cold War. U.S. opposition to its intervention in Ukraine could contribute to a 71% unfavorable rating in the Pew survey.

That being said, Russia has been more than willing to get chummy (or something worse) with the United States in the last few years since the election of Donald Trump.  Hopefully things come to an amicable end now that Trump is out of office.

Belarus
Belarus

Belarus is friendly with Russia and seems to harbor uneasy feelings about the United States. There, 69% disapprove of Americans.

However, Belarus" poor economic prospects may also play a role. Studies have found that countries that are struggling economically are more likely to have an unfavorable opinion of the United States.

Lebanon
Lebanon

Since 2007, Congress has placed conditions on annual aid to Lebanon. Such decisions have led to a 57% unfavorable rating of Americans in the country.

However, like some other countries on this list, the United States is not the sole object of Lebanon"s disapproval. The European Union in general and Germany specifically have dismal approval ratings as well.

Argentina
Argentina

A majority of Argentineans do not trust the U.S. to act responsibly in the world and give America a 57% unfavorable rating, according to The Argentine Post.

A lot of this animosity has to do with the fact that people from the United States frequently refer to themselves as Americans. But Argentinians are Americans too--South Americans.

Austria
Austria

According to MarketWatch, Austria has a 55% disapproval rating of the U.S.

And a lot of that sentiment comes down to something pretty silly--fast food. Apparently many Americans aren"t too adventurous when it comes to Austrian cuisine, which leads the locals to think we"re all afraid trying anything new.

Slovenia
Slovenia

Slovenians have a 54% negative view of the U.S., primarily because they don"t approve of its leadership. However, that didn"t really change when Melania Trump, who was born in the country, served as First Lady.

However, while Slovenians perceptions of Americans could be colored by our modern-day leadership, there is another possible explanation--Slovenia"s close relationship with the Soviet Union.

Denmark
Denmark
Denmark is one of the most peaceful countries in the world, which is probably why they hate us so much.In the Pew Research survey, Danes gave us a horrible 65% disapproval rating. Copenhagen may be where many quarantined Americans long be, but they don’t want our aggressive politics ruining their peace and quiet.
Tunisia
Tunisia

The anti-Islamic message in the propaganda film Innocence of Muslims posted online by a U.S. resident, contributes to the 47% unfavorable view of America in Tunisia.

That being said, American relations with Tunisia in the past have been warm at times, so there is no reason to think this relationship couldn"t be restored.

Pakistan
Pakistan

Much U.S. attention has focused on Pakistan since 9/11, and there is a continued military presence there that has resulted in 59% to 65% of Pakistanis having an unfavorable view of Americans.

Once Osama Bin Laden was found and killed in Pakistan, sentiment towards the United States has gotten even worse in the country.

Chile
Chile

With a 47% unfavorability rating, only a little over half of this South American country views the U.S. in a positive light.

This can cause trouble for America later on, as the U.S. State Department considers Chile one of the U.S.’s “strongest partners in Latin America.”

Australia
Australia

Australia’s 64% unfavorability rating can mostly be chalked up to their dislike of President George W. Bush and President Donald Trump.

Most Australians believe that Americans" ambition for power fuels both white nationalists and anti-racist counterprotesters in a confused medley of different views fighting for dominance.

Canada
Canada

Our northern neighbors" 51% disapproval rating stems mostly because from their dislike of Donald Trump and his policies that directly conflict with the country"s own.

But that doesn"t tell the whole story. Interestingly enough, anti-Americanism has been a rhetorical strategy that Canadian politicans have been using to win elections since at least 1891. So how much of that hate is genuine and how much is just for building political clout?

Netherlands
Netherlands

The majority of the Dutch public, 69%, view Americans as ignorant, fat, racist, and paranoid extremists. But, they hold out hope that the U.S. isn’t just a home for these negative stereotypes.

Many Dutch citizens hope that these negatives will be shoved back into the dark holes they crawled since Trump is out of office.

Mexico
Mexico

With a 65% unfavorability, Mexico isn"t a fan of America. Again, because of Donald Trump, and his xenophobic tendencies.

However, blaming it all on Trump might be giving him too much credit. The United States relationship with Mexico has always been rocky since the battles for territory in the 1800s.

Tajikistan
Tajikistan

This primarily Muslim country has seen a major escalation in negative perception, with a 54% disapproval rating.

That being said, it appears this small country doesn"t have a favorable view of many places. Other areas, like Europe and China have seen dropping approval numbers in Tajikistan as well.

Iraq
Iraq

Stemming mostly from the wars that have ravaged this country, Iraq’s 67% disapproval rating isn’t hard to understand.

Belgium
Belgium

Belgium has a complex history and several national languages, which is proof of their overall amity with varying cultures and languages, except for when it comes to Americans.

Belgium gave us a horrible 75% disapproval rating! That means that 75% of the people from Belgium that participated in this 2020 study disapprove of America in general. Shameful.

Sweden
Sweden

Similar to Canada, right down to the disapproval score of 65%. Sweden views liberal Americans as having a “Sweden fetish” as they view it as a liberal wonderland.

Donald Trump is also heavily to blame with the alienation of this democratic country as well. You’ll find he actually caused a lot of the rifts on this list to worsen over his presidency.

Spain
Spain

The United State"s management of coronavirus in 2020 and the unsavory Trump administration are at least partly to blame for Spain’s 58% disapproval rating, to say the least.

They are not alone in this disapproval either, as it seems most of Europe is in strong agreement with Spain on this one.

China
China

Over the past several years, escalating trade issues with China has led to a 49% disapproval rating.

The recent trade wars and the explosion of the coronavirus from Wuhan have definitely not helped improve relations between the two countries at the current moment.
