50 Ways to Decorate Like Joanna Gaines

There’s no denying that Chip and Joanna Gaines are the ultimate power couple. They got their start when HGTV noticed the work they were doing in Waco, Texas. Together, they had renovated hundreds of homes. While Chip focused on construction, Joanna focused on design. HGTV’s Fixer Upper documented their family and business ventures for five seasons. Viewers immediately fell for Joanna’s signature decorating style. They would sit through episode after episode waiting to see how Joanna had transformed a less-than-desirable space into a dream home. Although the series has since ended, Chip and Joanna are focusing on many other projects.

They’ve cultivated their namesake brand, Magnolia Market. Joanna sells unique home decor items and publishes her lifestyle journal and design blog. It’s ideal for fans who want to emulate her decorative style and follow her design advice.

After binge-watching way too many Fixer Upper episodes and spending a great deal of time on Magnolia Market’s website, we’ve created a list of tips to help you decorate like Joanna Gaines. These will help you capture Joanna’s soulful style!

Refresh Your Front Door
Refresh Your Front Door

If you’re looking to add curb appeal to your home’s exterior, take note from Joanna Gaines. She recommends refreshing your front door with a new coat of paint. Her recently released Magnolia Home exterior paint collection offers more than 150 paint shades.

They"re must-haves if you’re looking to redo your front door because the formulas are crafted to protect your home against harsh elements. Say goodbye to paint that peels, cracks, and blisters!

Add Seating to the Porch or Patio
Add Seating to the Porch or Patio

According to Joanna Gaines, every outdoor space needs a sitting area. Although rocking chairs and porch swings may seem cliché, they’re desirable. You can leisurely sip coffee on your front porch or unwind on your back patio with a glass of wine.

Continue to customize your outdoor space by adding flower boxes, a welcoming doormat, and a trendy wreath.

Examine Your Entryway
Examine Your Entryway

Thankfully, Joanna Gaines has design tips for every area of our home. She stresses the importance of a thoughtful entryway. This space is often overlooked, so she recommends focusing on the details of the entryway because this is the first thing your guests will see.

She likes to use benches, long console tables, oversized mirrors, and wall art to soften the space. She then incorporates plants, blankets, and pillows to add depth.

Focus on Seemingly Small Details
Focus on Seemingly Small Details

Part of Chip and Joanna’s success stems from their ability to focus on the seemingly small and insignificant details of a home. They’ve said goodbye to their HGTV series Fixer Upper, but their various construction and design renovations introduced viewers to an aesthetic that placed value in the details.

They mix and match pieces that are simple, fresh, and timeless.

Embrace Diversity
Embrace Diversity

The easiest way to embrace eclecticism or diversity in your home is to eliminate predisposed notions of what is and isn’t acceptable. Joanna isn’t afraid to experiment with colors, textures, and patterns, mix modern and retro accents, or add character to a space.

If you’re wanting to incorporate an eclectic design into your home, look to Joanna for inspiration. Baskets, bookshelves, paintings, and trinkets are an easy way to eclectically accessorize your home.

Cultivate Cozy Corners
Cultivate Cozy Corners

In order for a room to be livable, it must feel cozy. Plush furniture, textured rugs, oversized pillows, and soft throw blankets can help create a dreamy living space. While small design details are important, Joanna stresses the importance of furniture arrangement when decorating a living room.

If this is going to be a place for friends and family to sit and chat, furniture should be arranged in a way that encourages conversation.

Create Multipurpose Spaces
Create Multipurpose Spaces

If you’re working with a small apartment or home, make the most out of your space. Joanna has a knack for designing rooms that achieve multiple goals. She’s been known to line hallways with bookshelves, create guest bedrooms that double as playrooms, and transform entryways into functional office spaces.

Follow Joanna’s lead and don’t limit a space to just one function.

(Image via Pinterest)
Utilize Neutrals
Utilize Neutrals

Shades of white, taupe, and beige are Joanna’s backdrop of choice. Honestly, we can’t blame her. Neutrals never go out of style. Furniture, textiles, and decorations shine in comparison to light-colored walls and can be replaced and rearranged without clashing.

If these perks aren’t enough, neutral shades brighten, calm, and allow rooms to appear larger. Magnolia Market’s interior paint collection features Joanna’s hand-selected colors—including her favorite shades of neutral.

Mix and Match Patterned Tiles
Mix and Match Patterned Tiles

A wonderful way to add personality to a master or guest bathroom is to install mixed tiles. This may seem counterproductive, but it creates a unique aesthetic. The most important tip is to mix only the pattern of the tiles, not the color. This allows your bathroom to look cohesive, yet stylish.

For example, hexagonal penny tiles on the floor and subway tiles on the wall (or in the shower) would break up consistency! A bit of variety is important in any room, so make sure your tiling isn"t drabbing up the place.

Don’t Neglect Rooms Made for Chores
Don’t Neglect Rooms Made for Chores

It’s true. It’s typically more exciting to decorate spaces we enjoy spending time in rather than rooms we dread walking into—like the laundry room. But because Joanna is the queen of interior design, she can transform even the dullest of utility rooms into something great.

She recently said she’s “learned that when you make your spaces creative and fun, it helps make the chores, like laundry, not so bad.”

Line Your Walls With Family Photos
Line Your Walls With Family Photos

Whether Joanna is decorating her own home or the home of a client, she enjoys lining the walls with family photos. She believes a home should be a reflection of the people living in it—which is why she prefers to decorate with sentimental images.

She transformed her own home by hanging black and white images of her family on their shiplap walls. The images can be admired as guests walk up or down the stairs.

Choose a Bold Backsplash
Choose a Bold Backsplash

Fixer Upper kitchen makeovers were truly inspiring. No matter what kind of refresh Joanna and Chip completed, the end product had us drooling. Whether the kitchen was mid-century, modernized, or completely vintage, it almost always utilized a bold backsplash.

Joanna isn’t afraid to experiment with colors and patterns in the kitchen. Installing a ceramic, glass, or stone backsplash is an easy way to update your space!

Experiment with Wallpaper
Experiment with Wallpaper

Wallpaper has made a much-needed comeback. Joanna Gaines decided to take advantage of this recurring trend by creating her own line of wallpaper. The Magnolia Homes wallpaper collection has the ability to transform, personalize, and reinvent a space. They offer a variety of colors and patterns that will complement any room.

Joanna even created removable shiplap wallpaper that’s perfect for those who rent an apartment or home. You don"t need to own a space to make it your own.

Add a Vent Hood to Your Kitchen
Add a Vent Hood to Your Kitchen

Chip and Joanna Gaines are known for their fusion of rustic and sleek elements, especially in the kitchen. Stainless steel appliances and granite countertops are paired boldly with wood floors and custom range hoods.

According to Joanna, vent hoods are a must-have. They can be pricey when made and installed by companies such as Rangecraft, but other craftsmen can attempt to duplicate a stylish vent hood for a discounted price.

Invest in Accent Pieces
Invest in Accent Pieces

Decorative accent pieces are what turns a house into a home. These are the small details that you add to your space to create personality. They tell the story of you, your family, and your home. Joanna uses books, candles, vases, greenery, blankets, and pillows to personalize a room. She always reminds fans that accent pieces are “the finishing touches that really make a room feel finished.”

This is your opportunity to decorate like Joanna, but also like you! Personalize your space with what pleases you or what would make good talking points for you and your guests that speak to your personality.

(Image via Pinterest)
Incorporate Inspirational Wall Decor
Incorporate Inspirational Wall Decor

If you’ve shopped on Joanna’s Magnolia website, you’ve most likely seen the abundance of wall decor she sells. These are pieces that inspire her, and she hopes they will inspire you, too. Wall scrolls, banners, expressions, and signs illustrate words of affirmation and encouragement. Displaying an inspirational quote will give your home major Joanna vibes.

Be careful here. It"s easy to lean a bit too far into the decorative quote and end up with something tacky like "Live, Laugh, Love." If you look around, there are bound to be site where you can customize your quote.

Use Lighting to Make Rooms Appear Bigger
Use Lighting to Make Rooms Appear Bigger

Lighting is often used to maximize spaces. It’s a trick that’s been around for decades. Recently though, Joanna Gaines introduced us to yet another brilliant design tip that amplifies the amount of light in your home. She recommends hanging pendant lights in front of mirrors. The reflection of the light is instantly doubled.

Not only will the hanging lights look trendy, but they’ll increase visibility in dark spaces and make your room appear bigger than it is.

Opt for Open Storage
Opt for Open Storage

Once again, Joanna Gaines has given us a decorating tip that we’re ready to copy. Instead of shoving kitchenware into cabinets, she’s taught us to take advantage of open storage. Sturdy open shelves allow you to display decorative plates, cups, and other miscellaneous kitchen items. If you don’t already have open shelves in your kitchen, they’re fairly easy to build, and you’ll likely love the results!

Not only do these open shelves look cute, but they also come in handy for keeping track of everything in your kitchen. This is especially important when moving into a new house and helpful for your guests.

(Image via Pinterest)
Set Up Shiplap
Set Up Shiplap

If you’ve ever watched HGTV’s Fixer Upper, you know Joanna Gaines is obsessed with shiplap. The wooden paneling creates a rustic look for an inexpensive cost. The rows of wooden planks are easily pieced together thanks to overlapping rabbet joints. Once installed, you can purchase a one-quart can of paint from Magnolia Home that will complement your shiplap.

Okay, these are more for style than they are for practicality, but they only slightly more difficult to maneuver and infinitely cuter than most other options for blinds, so the tradeoff is well worth it.

(Image via Pinterest)
Utilize Florals and Greenery
Utilize Florals and Greenery

Joanna Gaines understands the importance of decorating with florals. Whether you prefer potted plants, faux greenery, or fresh blooms from the grocery store, incorporating plants into your decor will add an extra layer to your space. And because Joanna is the ultimate plant-lady, you can now order houseplants directly to your door!

Her favorites include the fiddle leaf fig, hoya plant, sweet bay laurel bush, and monstera philodendron. That said, sue whatever greenery suits you and your home best.

Knock Down Walls to Create Open Spaces
Knock Down Walls to Create Open Spaces

Fixer Upper’s fixation with open floor plans has convinced loyal fans to consider knocking down interior walls so their homes will resemble those remodeled by Chip and Joanna. Although this can be a daunting task, it has the potential to completely change the layout of your home.

This project creates big, multi-functional spaces that can expand across several rooms. This kind of open concept is perfect for many uses, but especially entertaining. You"ll have enough room for all your guests to fit comfortably without having to split them between rooms.

(Image via Pinterest)
Allow Your Home to Tell a Story
Allow Your Home to Tell a Story

Your home is an extension of yourself and should tell your story. Every piece of furniture and every accessory you choose to display in your home represents who you are. Joanna has cultivated a style that represents her. While we are inspired by her decor, she gives us the opportunity to build upon her ideas by offering a line of home decor that’s highly customizable.

Your home is easily one of the biggest and most obvious extensions of who you are. Make sure it"s representing you in a way that is clear and authentic to everyone you invite over.

(Image via Pinterest)
Understand Less is More
Understand Less is More

Joanna isn’t technically a minimalist, but she does know that less is more when it comes to decorating. She encourages men and women to be selective when styling and accessorizing their home. Not only will your home feel less overwhelming, but it will save you money. Only buy and display pieces you absolutely love!

Open space makes as much of a statement as any piece of furniture can, as long as you"re deliberate with the space you create. Let your home breathe and you"ll breathe more easily yourself.

(Image via Pinterest)
Don’t Rush Decorating
Don’t Rush Decorating

Joanna advises fans to slowly acquire home decor items. Interior design should never be rushed. Unfortunately, many people rush to decorate. Finding the perfect decorations takes time. Joanna recommends living in your space for a bit before deciding what you need.

When you spot accessories you can’t live without, purchase them. In the end, you’ll have a collection of decorations you truly love and admire, and you"ll be thankful you had the time to make it.

(Image via Pinterest)
Mix and Match Textiles
Mix and Match Textiles

As you decorate, you should experiment with imperfection. Instead of purchasing a set of matching pillows or two of the same throw blankets, opt for contrast. Mixing and matching textiles is not only accepted, it’s encouraged. Joanna Gaines says that colors, patterns, and textures should vary. This creates depth and dynamic in your home.

Too much of one color or style will quickly suck the life out of any space, so open your decor up to a multitude of patterns and designs. Let your house be as beautifully diverse as you are.

(Image via Pinterest)
Layer Seasonal Elements into Your Decor
Layer Seasonal Elements into Your Decor

Whatever the holiday, you have full permission to decorate accordingly. Thankfully, Joanna Gaines has eased the transition between seasons. Instead of completely redecorating the interior and exterior of your home, she recommends layering seasonal elements into your current decor. By adding festive accessories, you can quickly transform your home’s seasonal aesthetic.

This kind of layering also matches the gradual transition of the seasons, which is more accurate to the passage of time. That way, no one can accuse you of putting out Christmas decorations too early - or whatever the case may be.

Plan Your Tablescapes
Plan Your Tablescapes

Nothing’s prettier than a decorated dinner or dining table. If you’re looking to decorate like Joanna Gaines, recreate one of her stylish tablescapes. This is a great way to transform your home for the holidays. Beautiful dishware, placemats, cloth napkins, and seasonal decor will up the elegance of your kitchen or dining area.

Your guests will appreciate the time and effort you put into making your space beautiful and welcoming. Half the fun of any dinner party is the atmosphere anyway, so make sure you"re curating an all-around dining experience for your friends and loved ones.

Add Candles and Fragrances
Add Candles and Fragrances

When Joanna Gaines blogged about her favorite candle, her fans took note. It’s the Magnolia Signature Candle in linen. Other scents are sold online and in Magnolia Market, and you can’t go wrong with any of them. The candles come in 11-ounce and 26-ounce jars. The homemade scents are fresh, cozy, and pleasant.

Your home should be an experience for all the senses, and smell is one of the most important for making an impression. Candles will help you to control that aspect to fit your nasal needs and olfactory affections.

Decorate With Display Ladders
Decorate With Display Ladders

If you watch Fixer Upper reruns, it’s likely you’ve witnessed Joanna decorating with a wooden or metal display ladder. These ladders are a unique way to add dimension and texture to your home. Because they’re for decorative use only, they look best when layered with blankets and knits.

Beyond the comforting and dynamic feel these ladders add to your home, they also make easy access to blankets for when you"re not trying to impress and you just want to be cozy in your beautiful home.

Find Your Design Style
Find Your Design Style

Joanna and Chip Gaines often preach the importance of finding and developing one’s own design style. While taking note of their brilliant design and renovation tips, tricks, and techniques, you can still make your space feel personalized and intimate.

Joanna has many blog posts on her website describing past home remodels. Each home is different and based on the owners’ design preferences. Authenticity is so important when decorating a space!

Mix and Match Design Styles
Mix and Match Design Styles

Joanna Gaines is best known for the farmhouse style, but that doesn’t mean that she only decorate with items, textures, and colors that only fall within that specific style. No! She mixes it up with combining several design styles into one space to match the aesthetic desires of the project.

Of course, with mixing design styles, you have to keep in mind that everything should be coherent and look good together. However, mixing and matching design styles is a great way to obtain a very tailored look to your space that speaks to who you are. Because of course, we are all a mixture of several things, and not just one thing is our entire identity, so don’t subject your home to the same fate!

(Image via Instagram)
Use Galvanized Pendants
Use Galvanized Pendants
Joanna is a big fan of galvanized pendants, and really any other item that is made of galvanized metal. This is because this type of metal adds texture and diversity to your space. Galvanized metal can also be incorporated into several design style types, but is most commonly found in farmhouse and industrial. This makes this type of metal so useful in several different types of spaces. It can be combined with several other elements to create a contrast of cold to warm, soft to hard, and so on to add balance to your space. All white kitchens are nice, but to add that much-needed contrast to balance the room, we’re pretty sure Joanna Gaines would add some galvanized pendants as the accent piece of choice.
(Image via Instagram)
Consider White Slipcovers
Consider White Slipcovers
In several of Joanna’s designs you will likely see white fabric furniture, and if you have pets, kids, or just enjoy having the occasional glass of red wine while sitting on the couch, you probably think that this color of furniture would not work for you. This is where slipcovers could really help!Slipcovers are easier to clean than fabric that is sewn into the furniture. Also, they are a lot cheaper than buying a whole couch if stains are a concern for you. Slipcovers are the freedom you need when it comes to design style and functionality. It blends the best of all of the worlds together so you can have your Joanna Gaines style living room and your glass of red on the couch.

Don’t Forget the Subway Tiles
Don’t Forget the Subway Tiles
Subway tiles are BIG in a ton of Magnolia branded content. They have definitely been having a moment in interior design for several years now, and Joanna Gaines herself has been a big proponent of them. Specifically we have seen her use white subway tile with dark grout. This style of subway tile goes great with the farmhouse aesthetic and the industrial aesthetic, which are two big ones that Joanna loves to mix together. Both of these design styles are more worn-in, have darker colors, and aren’t as polished as a pure subway tile with light grout would appear.

Add a Farmhouse Sink
Add a Farmhouse Sink
Not only have farmhouse sinks been uber-popularized by Joanna Gaines, but they are also uber-functional. Even if you don’t care too much for the aesthetic purposes of a farmhouse sink, you cannot deny the ease of use they bring into a kitchen. They are big and spacious, making doing the dishes a breeze. No more spilling water all over the floor or counter while trying to wash pots and pans, a farmhouse sink can contain it all. They also look a lot better than the builder-grade stainless steel sinks that have been very commonly used in the last several decades. Step aside, boring small sinks, and hello farmhouse sinks.
(Image via Instagram)
Don’t Shy Away From Color Accents
Don’t Shy Away From Color Accents
Even though a lot of Joanna Gaines’s work is centered around a neutral color palette, that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t use color. As any good designer would know, it is all about balance, and since Joanna is a great designer, she implements a balance in color into her work.To counterbalance any boring or sterile vibes that could come from an entire house done in black and white, she makes sure to use accents of color like blue or teal. She even adds in reds, oranges, and greens too to add life to a very neutral palette. Don’t look through her lookbook, see a lot of black and white, then decorate your house in only blacks and whites. You will not get the same effect. Take time to add intentional color in places like rugs, pillows, and accent pieces.
(Image via Instagram)
Choose a Good Rug
Choose a Good Rug
Speaking of rugs, they are very important to tying a space together. As a concept, rugs can define a space within a larger space, create visual warmth, and provide great function as well. Adding a rug underneath your dining table and chairs, for example, will define that space as the dining area, even if before it felt like it was kind of just floating in random space.A good rug is important to choose to create the needed visual warmth, and to provide the needed function as well. What’s the point of owning a rug that just falls apart every few months? Some get really high traffic and need to withstand that kind of traffic. The right type of rug could also turn a long, sterile hallway into a comfortable and inviting one.
(Image via Instagram)
Use Vintage Signs
Use Vintage Signs
Signs that are vintage that you can find at a thrift store or an antique store, or signs that you can buy brand new that look like they are vintage, are great to add to your space if you are wanting to get the Joanna Gaines look. These go best in spaces that you want to look like a farmhouse, because they will usually say something about a farmer’s market, grocery store, bakery, or just something that identifies with a quaint little farm community. These will definitely help to add character to your space.
(Image via Instagram)
Go for the Iron Accents
Go for the Iron Accents
Dark iron or bronze accents are towards the top of things that Joanna Gaines loves to add in nearly all of her designs. This is because of the contrast and character that they bring to the space. Dark iron and dark bronze look like they are aged, even if they are just designed to look that way, and therefore help tell a story. They also contrast nicely with lighter color surroundings, giving the space depth and dimension. You can add these accents in the form of light fixtures, door and drawer handles, bathroom fixtures, and even chairs. It just depends on how moody you want to make your space and how much contrast you are willing to accept.
(Image via Instagram)
Dine with Metal Chairs
Dine with Metal Chairs

One thing that you can see as a common element in a lot of Magnolia spaces are metal dining chairs. Whether they are at the dining room table, the breakfast nook, or the countertop space, metal chairs in the eating spaces will help to give you that Joanna Gaines look.

The beauty of metal chairs is that they are actually very versatile to your aesthetic. You can get ones that look very weathered, or you can get ones that look more polished. They also come in a variety of shapes and shades. So, whether you are leaning more rustic farmhouse or sleek industrial, metal chairs are the way to go.

(Image via Instagram)
Thrift for Vintage Finds
Thrift for Vintage Finds

One thing that you will have noticed from watching countless episodes of Fixer Upper is that Joanna loves to find pieces of old doors, windows, and other architectural pieces from vintage and antique shops and from places that sell reclaimed wood. She then makes them a focal point or creates a new piece of furniture from them.

These pieces can give your home character, even if it doesn’t seem to have some to begin with. Finding something vintage, whether it’s a piece of an old building or a piece of vintage or antique furniture will help tell a bigger story than brand new pieces from Ikea or Home Goods ever could.
(Image via Instagram)
Can’t Forget the Clock
Can’t Forget the Clock
If you love the farmhouse look, you can’t go wrong with having a large clock as an accent piece in your home. It can be a simple statement by itself, or it can go well with a carefully curated gallery wall. Joanna has used, and even sells, these types of clocks. All of us have that one wall that we don’t know what to do with. Add a clock! Or if you have space over the back of your couch, bed, or credenza, add a clock! It doesn’t even have to be a functional clock if you don’t want it to be. It’s all for the aesthetic.
(Image via Instagram)
Don’t Shy Away from Industrial
 Don’t Shy Away from Industrial
As we have mentioned throughout, although Joanna focuses largely on the farmhouse style with her personal aesthetic, she does not shy away from industrial. In fact, her farmhouse style incorporates many elements from industrial as well. This is why some of her more industrial style spaces come out just as beautiful as her farmhouse ones. She’s great at both!Industrial might seem cold and unwelcoming when not done correctly, but adding in cozy elements from styles like farmhouse could liven it up. Just like if you are decorating largely in the farmhouse style things could get a little too frilly, so you calm them down with industrial accents.
(Image via Instagram)
Create Smaller Vignettes Throughout Your Home
Create Smaller Vignettes Throughout Your Home
Whether or not you are dealing with a large space, making smaller vignettes throughout your home will help it feel more thoughtfully designed and curated. This could mean that one room doesn’t have to be the living room with a sofa and chairs all centered around a tv or a fireplace.Instead, you can have the vignette of the sofa, fireplace and two chairs, then off to the side have a separate reading nook and to another side have a smaller sitting area. This helps you use more of the space more efficiently. Also when decorating specific spots, like in the bookcase or on the mantle, put the same effort towards those small areas and view the individual spots with care and then zoom out to see how they fit with the rest of the room.
(Image via Instagram)
Decorate the Ceiling as Well
Decorate the Ceiling as Well
Don’t forget your ceiling when you are decorating your space! You could have the most thoughtfully designed setup ever, but once you glance up, you realize you have missed a very important part: the ceiling! Paying attention to the ceiling when you are designing a space can really take your design to the next level.Changing out the “boob lights” and outdated or plain builder grade light fixtures are a great way to get started with fixing up your ceiling decorating game. However, if you want to go to the next level, add some kinds of decorative elements other than drywall. Something like wood or decorative paneling, wooden beams, and other designs help to draw your entire room together.
(Image via Instagram)
Mix the Old with the New
Mix the Old with the New

Just because vintage and antique finds are great for designing a space to look like it’s straight from the mind of Joanna Gaines, doesn’t mean that you can’t add in something new or modern to go with it. In fact, that is exactly what you should do! If you design something with only new or only old items, the design can fall flat.

However, if you mix and match old pieces with newer pieces, you get a wonderful dance of contrast and character that looks just picture perfect. This contrast and juxtaposition of elements is not only the difference between old and new, but they can also contain contrasts in color, texture, and design that will add interest to your space.

(Image via Instagram)
Add Plants
Add Plants
Plants are great for any space. You don’t have to be a boho goddess in order to have houseplants. They go great with any style! Joanna definitely doesn’t shy away from using plants as accent pieces in her designs. While live plants are great, the right kind of fake plants could give you the same effect, without all of the work.Plants help bring a good balance to a space. If a space is already very earthy but lacks plants, it just feels off until the plants are added. If a space is very sleek and modern, it just won’t feel cozy until you add a fiddle leaf fig in the corner. Don’t underestimate the power of plants.
(Image via Instagram)
Play Around with Textures
Play Around with Textures
A space with great design has a variety of texture in it, no matter the design style. You need elements of gloss, metal, wood, cloth, and many other types of textures to make a room really feel finished. If you just chose items based on color alone, it could turn out well, but if you chose also with texture in mind, it could turn out expertly styled. For example, you could even choose to have a cream colored couch with cream colored pillows. If you chose the pillows and couch in the same texture of fabric, it could turn out very one-dimensional. However, if you chose textures that contrast with each other instead, that could add ten new levels of dimension that you didn’t even know were possible. Don’t forget the texture!
(Image via Instagram)
Don’t Be Afraid to Separate a Large Space into Smaller Spaces
Don’t Be Afraid to Separate a Large Space into Smaller Spaces
If you love the open concept that nearly everyone on Fixer Upper said they wanted, then essentially you are creating one big space out of what was once several smaller spaces. So, if in your home you have an area that could just be a large living space, perhaps too large, don’t be afraid to break it down into smaller sections. For example, part of it could be your dining space. One section of it could even turn into a functional office area. If your front door is in the same room, an entry way could even be made out of some of it. Just because you have one room doesn’t mean you have to treat it as one room. Create the other rooms just through arranging the furniture, not putting up walls.
(Image via Instagram)
Forget About Placing All Furniture Against the Walls
Forget About Placing All Furniture Against the Walls

While you might be tempted to design your space around the walls: don’t! That is usually not the most functional thing you can do with your space, believe it or not. Having all of your furniture backed up against a wall does not make it look like the thoughtfully designed space you want it to.

Instead when designing a room, choose a center point to go off of. In your living room, for example, you might need two center points. One could be the fireplace or the TV, and the other is the rug that is centered in just the right spot. Then design the furniture around the rug and facing the fireplace not caring whether or not the furniture touches the wall. But of course, also keep in mind important walkways.
