Where to get programming help for TradingView Pine?

While Kodify has plenty of TradingView articles, not every possible question and situation is documented. So what if you"re stuck and can"t find an answer? Or don"t have the time to do the programming yourself? Let"s see where you can get help.

IN THIS ARTICLE:

  • Community-powered (free) TradingView help
    • StackOverflow: TradingView help in Q&A-forum style
    • Pine Editor chat: official TradingView chat
    • Pine Scripters: independent Telegram group
# Community-powered (free) TradingView help

Community help is a great idea when you have a specific problem and code to share. It"s free and often quicker than contacting a paid professional. However, it can be hard to get help with complex or broad questions. Here are some places to find free help:

# StackOverflow: TradingView help in Q&A-forum style

On StackOverflow you can post TradingView Pine programming questions.

Benefits:

  • Several knowledgeable TradingView users visit StackOverflow.
  • You can place your question and return later. There"s no need to be online at the same time as someone who knows the answer.

Drawbacks:

  • StackOverflow can be an unfriendly environment. If a question is unclear or ‘low effort’, people can be quick to point that out. There"s also a risk that your question gets closed.
  • It takes time and effort to write a good StackOverflow question. You"ll have to clarify what you mean, the things you tried, what you expected but that didn"t happen, and make a small code example that shows the problem.
  • It can be hard to get a good answer. And sometimes answers aren"t helpful or practical.
# Pine Editor chat: official TradingView chat

On TradingView there"s an official Pine Editor chat for programming questions.

Advantages:

  • Lots of knowledgeable TradingView programmers.
  • Discussions are focused on Pine coding; there"s little off-topic ‘noise’.
  • Real-time help; with a bit of luck you get an answer immediately.
  • No need to register on a different website. Instead you can access the Pine chat straight from inside the TradingView app. There you can also message people for 1-on-1 help.

Disadvantages:

  • When you post your question, you have to hope that someone who knows the answer is online at the moment. Else your question gets pushed out of the chat view by other messages.
  • In general, a chat is geared towards quick questions. If you have a complex query that requires additional clarification, getting a response is less likely.
# Pine Scripters: independent Telegram group

The Pine Scripters Telegram group is an independent community of TradingView users.

Benefits:

  • Real-time chat; you can get an answer almost immediately. Plus you can quickly clarify and give more information when needed.
  • Several skilled TradingView Pine programmers there.

Drawbacks:

  • When you ask your question, someone that knows the answer has to be online in the chat as well. Else your question is buried by other messages as time passes.
  • Requires a Telegram account. That requires registering your mobile phone number with Telegram. Then you"ll need to use the web-based app or install an app on your telephone or computer.
  • Telegram has no separate channels like other chat applications (such as Slack). And so every message is placed in the same chat. At times there"s off-topic discussion and ‘noise’, which pushes your question away.
